COVINGTON -- Now is the time that all basketball teams have to play their A-game as it's either win or go home as the region playoffs begin today.
The Eastside boys, who are the No. 3 seed, will begin their quest for one of the four coveted Region 4-AAA spots against Stockbridge at 5:30 p.m. today at Eagle's Landing. In previous meetings, the Eagles swept Stockbridge 68-56 and 49-41.
Hoping to lead the Eagles to the semifinals round, where they will play the winner of the No. 2 seed Drew and No. 7 seed Spalding at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, are Ben Miller, who was named to the first region team, and Quindarrious Russell, who was named to the honorable mention team.
The Alcovy boys, who enter the Region 3-AAAA tournament as the No. 1 seed from Region 3A-AAAA, will face host-team Whitewater at 7 p.m. The Wildcats beat Ola 55-43 in the play-in game to get a chance to face the Tigers. The winner will advance to the semifinal round at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Wednesday will start the main day with four games taking place.
The Newton girls will start things with a 4 p.m. game against Langston Hughes at Westlake in the Region 2-AAAAA tournament. The No. 2 seed Newton boys will end the day's events with an 8:30 game against Stephenson.
In the remaining girls games, No. 3 Eastside will match the boys opponent playing Stockbridge at 5:30 at Eagle's Landing.
The Alcovy girls, who are also the No. 1 seed from their subregion, will take on the winner the Griffin/Harris County play-in game.
