Rams ruin Senior NIght for Luella

COVINGTON -- Both Newton basketball squads ruined Senior Night for Luella with a sweep over the Lions on Friday.

In similar scores, the Lady Rams (19-6 overall, 9-5 Region 2-AAAAA) won the opening game 62-57 before the Newton boys (19-6, 10-4) swept the doubleheader with a 61-57 win.

After killing 50 seconds and the scored tied at 57 in the boys game, Newton's Stephen Croone hit the game-winning jumper with two seconds left on the clock. Luella (17-8, 7-7) fouled Newton with less than one tick left giving the Rams the four-point win.

Croone had a game-high 22 points. He was 50 percent shooting from 3-point range going 3-for-6 and had five assist.

The Eastside girls tennis team went to .500 for the season with a 4-1 win over Alcovy after losing to Newton by the same score.

Winning for the Newton girls were Kelsey Swinson and Tenia Morgan in singles action with the teams of Allie Brazelton/Shundra Kelton and Val Yates/Marie Diaz winning in doubles.

Against Alcovy, Eastside's Amanda Blackwell beat Mary Ruth Davis 8-1 at No. 1 singles; Kolyse Wagstaff (EHS) beat Brandie Weathersby (AHS) 8-0 at No. 2 singles; and Ellen Blockowitz (EHS) defeated Gabby Evans (AHS) 8-1 at No. 3 singles.

The two teams split the doubles matches with Tashana Haye and Wendy Rodriguez (EHS) getting the 8-4 win over Nicole Brooks and Trist Twiford (AHS) at No. 1 doubles while Alcovy's Myel Bowers and Briana Chancy beating Carli Barbo and Emmy Jordan(EHS) 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.

In the boys Eastside/Alcovy match, winning for Alcovy were John Gammans (8-2 over D'Andre Charlot at No 1 singles), Jerry Anderson (8-5 over Egan Kelly-Burnett at No. 2 singles). Jake Cowan (8-6 over Matthew Sherrell at No. 3 singles) and the team of Clayton Anderson and David Rash at No. 1 doubles.

Nick Tanner and Chase Bailey, at No. 2 doubles, got the only win for the Eastside boys.
