Rockdale football player earns rare Csonka award

The Rockdale football team may have had a tough 2011, but one player capped the season by receiving a huge honor.

Larry Jones was recently named one of 12 NAPA/Larry Csonka Blue Collar players of the year. Jones, a defensive end, is one of 12 players in the state of Georgia to receive this honor and the only from Region 8-AAAA.

The NAPA/Larry Csonka Blue Collar Player of the Year Award was created "to honor players that deserve, but rarely receive recognition. The honor recognized those hard working, blue collar players that, according to NFL Hall of Famer Larry Csonka, show up for work every day and never complain, unsung heroes who spend little time in the spotlight but play pivotal roles in their team's success," according to a press release.

A banquet will be held in honor of the award recipients on Feb. 15, at 6:30 pm at Natalia's Italian Restaurant (201 North Macon Street Macon). Each player will be presented with a plaque commemorating their achievement, and will have the opportunity to meet Csonka, the former Miami Dolphins great.

Barfield commits

Rockdale senior pitcher Aaron Barfield verbally committed to Young Harris College. Barfield, a right-hander who will enter the 2012 season as the Bulldogs No. 1 starter, and then join the Mountain Lions in 2013 as they begin their transition to Division II.

Barfield will officially sign in April. Rockdale opens its season Feb. 24 at Douglass.

Ware contributes for Cardinals

Though his minutes have been limited during his first two months as a collegiate basketball player, Kevin Ware has had his moments. The former Rockdale star had two assists and a steal in five minutes in Louisville's 80-59 win over Connecticut, the Cardinals' fifth consecutive victory. Ware is averaging 6.1 minutes in 14 games, though he does have eight assists and five steals for Louisville, which travels to West Virginia on Saturday.
