COVINGTON -- A Conyers woman who allegedly tried to cash forged checks at two different businesses Monday was arrested by the Covington Police Department.
Misty Chastain, 36, of 904 Malcom St., Conyers, was arrested by the Covington Police Department at L&B Recycling on Washington Street after she had allegedly made a second attempt to cash a forged check. She is charged with forgery in the first degree.
Police were initially called to Alcovy Jewelry and Pawn on Washington Street at about 1 p.m. Monday where an employee told officers that a woman identifying herself as Chastain came into the store and attempted to cash a check for $895.10 on the account of Rockdale Pipeline.
The employee questioned the check and called Rockdale Pipeline to verify it. Chastain reportedly left and said she would come back later. An employee at Rockdale Pipeline verified that the check was stolen.
A few minutes later, police received a dispatch reporting a forgery in progress at the BP station on Washington Street.
When police arrived the suspect had reportedly already left and gone to L&B Recycling.
A worker at the BP station told police that the woman had attempted a check for $895.10 on the Rockdale Pipeline account. The worker had called Rockdale Pipeline and verified that the check was stolen.
The worker told police that Chastain had been to the BP gas station the previous day where she allegedly was able to cash a check for $895.10 on the account of Rockdale Pipeline.
Officers reviewed the videotape from the BP station, which reportedly showed the suspect arriving at the store in a black Chevrolet Avalanche.
Chastain was arrested at taken to the Newton County Detention Center.
