Heritage soccer alums score on the honor roll

While their former teammates Courtney Hodges and Arielle Gunderson signed athletics scholarships Wednesday, Sydney Smith and Shealy Kulp are already making headlines at the collegiate level.

Smith and Kulp, former Heritage soccer stand outs and Valdosta State freshmen who were part of the first women's soccer team in the program's history, were recently named to the Gulf South Conference's fall academic honor roll. Smith, a biology major, had a 4.0 grade-point average, while Kulp, a history major who had a goal and two assists in 12 games a year ago, secured a 3.07.Jaguars open season with doubleheader sweepThe Georgia Perimeter College junior college baseball team, fresh off a Region 17 championship, got its 2012 season off to a dominant start Tuesday in Covington.

The Jaguars swept a doubleheader from West Georgia Tech, winning 11-2 and 7-1. In game one, Trumon Jefferson, Christopher Madera and Wes Armstrong combined to drive in seven runs to back the pitching of reliever Nikolay Uherek, who pitched three scoreless innings for the victory. In the nightcap, GPC got four innings of one-run ball and seven strikeouts from freshman right-hander Sam Bragg to complete the sweep.
