CONYERS For the second year, students and staff at the Rockdale Career Academy are teaming up to have a 5K and fun run this weekend.
RCA's 2012 Fast Forward 5K & Fun Run is scheduled for Saturday. The 5K will begin at 11 a.m., and the 1-mile at 10:30 a.m.
"A 5K and fun run event is great for people at all levels of fitness," said Chad Walker, assistant principal at RCA. "RCA'sevent is a great place for people to experience their first formal run or add to their list of races."
The school held its first event last year.
"Last year we had runners who were making our 5K one of several that they were running on the same day," Walker said. "Anyone can run, walk, jog and or jog-walk this event."
The start and finish line is located at RCA, 1064 Culpepper Drive, off Parker Road, in Conyers.
"This is a schoolwide effort -- many of our programs are working together for this event," Walker said.
Students from the school's public safety program will assist in traffic control and parking during the race, and health care students will conduct blood pressure checks as well as provide any medical assistance if needed, he said.
Awards will be given to overall male/female, masters male/female and top three male/female in age groups beginning at 10 and under through 75 and over. Walker said anyone would enjoy the event.
"Avid runners, walkers, teachers, students, parents and athletes who are preparing for a spring sport may be particularly interested," he said.
Registration costs $20. Registration forms are available on the Rockdale County Public Schools website, www.rockdale.k12.ga.us, or registration will open at 9:30 a.m. on race day.
Proceeds will benefit students and programs at RCA.
"Funds will be used to fund scholarships and support all of our programs," Walker said. "This event allows us to fund things that enrich our students' experience through industry field trips, competitions or purchase additional equipment. We have many students who move on to state, national and international competitions. Funding these trips can be difficult, but we sincerely believe that the impact of the experience is priceless and look for ways to help students be able to go."
Student-designed race-day shirts are guaranteed to those who preregister for the event and will be available to other participants as supplies last on race day.
The school's broadcast video production program will provide live streaming of the event -- something new this year. Some of last year's funds helped purchase the equipment and software.
The community can watch the race on Saturday online at http://ghsa.tv/rockdalecareeracademy. Broadcast students also stream other events on the channel throughout the school year.
