Speeding stop leads to drug charges

CONYERS -- The Conyers Police Department arrested a Covington man on drug and other charges last week after an officer reported that he observed the man speeding on Interstate 20.

Willie Moses Lett, 23, of 1095 Ridge Ave., Covington, was arrested Dec. 22 after an officer pulled him over shortly after midnight on Interstate 20 east. The officer reported he observed Lett driving at 80 to 85 mph and pulled him over near Salem Road.

In speaking to Lett, the officer reported he smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The officer asked Lett how long it had been since he smoked marijuana, to which Lett allegedly replied, "About 25 minutes."

Lett reportedly agreed to a field sobriety test, after which the officer arrested Lett on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs. Lett reportedly agreed to a blood test and was taken to Rockdale Medical Center.

During a search of Lett's vehicle, the officer found a chrome-plated .38 special revolver loaded with five rounds, a cigarette pack containing suspected crack cocaine and another cigarette pack containing half of a marijuana cigarette.

Lett was charged with DUI drugs, possession of cocaine, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, possession of marijuana less than 1 ounce and speeding.
