CONYERS -- A ceremony dedicating a portion of Sigman Road in honor of a Rockdale County Sheriff's Office deputy who was killed in the line of duty will be held Thursday at 1 p.m.
Members of Brian Mahaffey's family, representatives from the Sheriff's Office, and Rockdale County commissioners will be on hand for the small ceremony at 1 p.m. The event will take place on Sigman Road near the intersection of Sigman and Chambers Drive. One sign will be erected and unveiled Thursday, with more signs planned to be placed on the northbound and southbound sides of Sigman Road.
Mahaffey, who was an investigator with the Sheriff's Office, was killed in the line of duty while executing an arrest warrant along with fellow deputies on May 8, 2010.
The Board of Commissioners is expected to ratify a resolution that reads in part, " ... the portion of Sigman Road located within the unincorporated area of Rockdale County, Georgia beginning at the intersection of Sigman Road and Old Covington Highway and continuing to the intersection of Sigman Road and Milstead Avenue, is hereby designated in honor of Investigator Brian Mahaffey."
"This will be a reminder to everyone who travels Sigman Road of the ultimate sacrifice Brian gave for his community," said Sheriff Jeff Wigington.
The Sheriff's Office offered a special thanks to Commissioner JaNice Van Ness for bringing this resolution to the Board of Commissioners for approval, and also to Steven Holmes with Protection Services Inc. for donating the signs.
