CONYERS -- The City Council last week approved changes in fees charged by the Conyers Police Department for various types of permits issued by the department.
According to Police Chief Gene Wilson, the Police Department surveyed the fees charged by agencies in surrounding areas and found that Conyers' fees in some cases needed to be increased to be more in line with others. Areas surveyed were DeKalb County, Alpharetta, Gwinnett County, Covington, Lawrenceville, Suwanee and Decatur.
Among the increased permit fees were: pawn license owner permit, which increased from $50 to $100; pawn employee permit, from $20 to $50; taxi driver permit, from $20 to $75; taxi vehicle inspection fee, from zero to $75; alcohol servers permit, from $20 to $35; peddler permit, from $20 to $50; previous metals owner permit, from $50 to $100; and precious metals employee permit, from $20 to $50.
The new permit fees are set to take effect Jan. 1.
The city also approved permit fees for poolroom employee ($35) and owner ($100) and carnival operator ($50) and employee ($20). These fees would not take effect until the city enacts ordinances governing them.
In other action, the City Council approved an ordinance for a conditional use for 5.01 acres on Sigman Road to allow a tobacco store on the site. The property is the new location for Sigman Bottle Shop in Northside Crossing shopping center.
