COVINGTON -- Newton County students and staff will get an extended break from school beginning this week.
The Newton County School System will be closed to students and staff from Dec. 21 through Jan. 3 for the holiday break. Additionally, Jan. 4 is a teacher workday.
The Board of Education building, which is located at 2109 Newton Drive NE in Covington, will be closed through Jan. 1. It will reopen on Jan. 2.
Teachers will report to schools on Friday, Jan. 4, and students will return to schools on Monday, Jan. 7.
The Newton County Board of Education met Tuesday for a combined monthly work session and regular session monthly meeting. It will meet again in January on Jan. 8 for a work session and Jan. 15 for a regular session.
After the New Year, students and staff will get their next break on Jan. 21 for a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Winter break is scheduled for Feb. 18 through 22 and spring break for April 1 through 5. The last day of school is May 24.
