CONYERS -- An 88-year-old Decatur woman was killed Thursday night in a four-car accident on Sigman Road.
According to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office, Rachel Fowler died of injuries she sustained after the car she was driving rear-ended another car on Sigman Road at Old Camp Trail. The accident occurred at about 7 p.m.
Investigator Michael Camp reported that a car was stopped on Sigman Road waiting to make a left turn onto Old camp Trail when the car Fowler was driving hit the first car in the rear, causing it to cross into the oncoming lane of traffic and sideswipe a third vehicle before coming to rest on Old Camp Trail. Fowler's vehicle also went into the opposite lane and hit a fourth vehicle before coming to a stop on Sigman Road.
According to Camp, the driver of the first vehicle that was waiting to make a left turn suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The drivers of the third and fourth vehicles were both transported by ambulance to an Atlanta hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Fowler was transported to Rockdale Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Camp said the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, and an autopsy is expected to be conducted to determine if a medical issue led to the accident.
