The School Crime Report for Dec. 14, 2012

The Newton County Sheriff's Office provides School Resource Officers to each high school and middle school in Newton County. The following is a list of reports filed by these officers that have been received this week by the Newton Citizen:

-- On Nov. 29, at 8 a.m. a student had an accident in the parking lot.

-- On Dec. 3 around 11:50 a.m. a student reported that her iPod Touch was stolen from her belongings during fifth period.

-- On Dec. 5, two female students were fighting in the girls restroom. There were no arrests or injuries. One student was suspended from school and received a citation for disorderly conduct.

-- On Dec. 10 around 9:20 a.m. the assistant principal notified the resource officer that she had some students in the administration office that might have drugs on them. A teacher had reported earlier that she suspected several students of having drugs in their possession or using drugs because they smelled like marijuana. When the school resource officer arrived, the principal asked one of the students if he had "anything he wasn't supposed to have. The student reached into his book bag and handed me (the resource officer) a plastic bag with a green leafy substance that I suspect to be marijuana," the NCSO incident report states. The student, a juvenile, was charged with possession of drugs within 1,000 feet of a school and possession of marijuana less than an ounce. He was released to the custody of his parents.

A second juvenile student was also arrested and found to possess a medicine bottle wrapped in black tape filled with individual bags of a green leafy substance and an electronic scale. He was charged with violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act, possession of a drug-related object and drug possession within 1,000 feet of school property. He was released to the custody of his parents.

-- A parent called an NCSO officer after school hours on Dec. 10 to report her son had his cell phone stolen at Veterans Middle School while he was in gym class. The iPhone 4 went missing from his locker and was valued at $500.

Why was the student with the multiple bags and the scale not charged with intent to distribute and detained? That sounds to me like a case could be made that he was obviously involved in the manufacture and distribution of the drug. It would seem to me that if we go after the kids that are dealing it, we could make more head way in keeping it out of the schools more. He/she/it needs to be expelled-if you want an education, you should not be selling drugs. Call me crazy but having a scale is more than just "I use it to unwind"

A common joke around the schools is that some kids only come every day because it is good for business. Our tax dollars are providing the space for them to conduct illegal activities. It is time to DEMAND change. If a principal cant or wont handle it then terminate them. PERIOD!
