COVINGTON -- Get those creative juices flowing because the Southern Heartland Art Gallery has plans for anyone who falls into the age range of 6 to 99.
They are offering an Elf Camp designed to give folks an opportunity to make unique and artistic tree ornaments and paintings for the holidays.
"We have a really successful summer art camp so we wanted to try to do something for the Christmas season, too," said Ann Wildmon who is organizing the event that will take place Dec. 19-22. "It's a great place for kids to come and adults too, if they want to."
The classes for Elf Camp will be held from 9 a.m. until noon and from 1-4 p.m. If staying for two classes in one day, participants should bring a sack lunch.
"It's a fun way to keep the kids entertained while the family runs errands or goes shopping," Wildmon said.
While some youngsters are not yet out of school for the holidays, many are and many more are home-schooled and can participate. But Wildmon stressed that the classes are also designed to challenge adults.
And, she promised, if you were left out when the artistic genes were being endowed, you will be able to create a lovely ornament or painting during these classes.
"On Friday we'll be painting a 16-by-20 canvas of a snowman that's really cute. It's step by step and stencils are also used," she said.
"We keep the stress level really low," she added. "We have facilitators or instructors to help."
Some of the other ornaments to be made through the week are really large paper snowflakes and mini canvas paintings.
The classes are $25 each except on Saturday when more expensive materials will be used and those classes are $30 and $35.
Wildmon suggested going to artincov.com to see samples of the ornaments before deciding which class to take.
Participants should call 770-788-8799 to reserve a spot and to prepay. There will be a limit of 15 students per session. Southern Heartland Art Gallery is located at 1132 Monticello St., just off the Covington Square.
