Four robbed at gunpoint in Newton County after car breaks down

COVINGTON -- Four young men were robbed at gunpoint around 6:15 Wednesday evening when their vehicle broke down on Mills Cove Drive, off Salem Road, in western Newton County, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the vehicle told NCSO deputies that he hit something in the road that caused a hole in the gas tank and gas began leaking from the car. He pulled over onto Mills Cove Drive and called a wrecker service.

While waiting for the wrecker, the four young men were sitting on the curb.

"Two black males, wearing black hoodies and red bandanas over their faces with just their eyes showing, approached them," said NCSO Public Information Officer Deputy Courtney Morrison. "One had a silver handgun and the other one had a bat. The gun was pointed at all four males and they were told to get on the ground and empty their pockets."

Morrison said the perpetrators were able to get away with two cellphones, two wallets and more than $100 in cash.

No one was injured in the incident.

The suspects appeared to be on foot. K-9 units were brought to the scene, but were unable to pick up a track.

Evidence was collected at the scene, Morrison said, adding that the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
