The Newton County Sheriff's Office provides School Resource Officers to each high school and middle school in Newton County. The following is a list of reports filed by these officers that have been received recently by the Newton Citizen:
ALCOVY HIGH SCHOOL
-- On Nov. 28, around 11:51 a.m., a cell phone was taken from a student's belongings.
-- On Sept. 14, a student reported a cell phone missing from her book bag.
NEWTON HIGH SCHOOL
-- On Nov. 6 around 3:45 p.m. while working on reports, a school resource officer was summoned to the office and shown a video of a student hitting another student while on the bus. The officer informed the parent of the student who was attacked that if she wanted to file simple battery charges, she could do so. The next day she called to say she did not wish to press charges.
-- On Nov. 13 around 8:10 a.m. the school resource officer responded to a physical altercation between two students and separated the two. Both students were taken to the front office and seen by the school nurse. The student found to be the aggressor was charged with simple battery under a juvenile complaint.
-- On Nov. 15 around 3:50 p.m. while working after school bus traffic, a resource officer was informed of one student hitting another student while at the bus ramp. He asked for a detailed written report and said the suspect will be charged with aggravated battery.
-- On Nov. 29 around 7:30 p.m. an NCSO deputy was called to a home on Deep Springs Road where it was reported that a male juvenile was assaulted on Nov. 15 at Newton High School by two other juveniles between the hours of 3:30 and 4:30 p.m.
-- On Nov. 28, around 2 p.m. a resource officer was summoned to the administrator's office and shown a clear bag with some green leafy substance in it which was received from a student. The student will be charged with possession of marijuana less than an ounce.
-- On Nov. 29, a parent notified a school resource officer that his child arrived home from school with scratches on his neck which were not present when he left for school that morning. The student is unable to communicate verbally; therefore, he cannot provide any information pertaining to the incident.
-- On Nov. 30 around 9 a.m. a school resource officer was informed by a teacher that a counterfeit $20 bill was collected during a transaction between two students. The officer retrieved the bill and requested a detailed statement from the teacher. The unknown suspect will be charged with forgery in the second degree.
-- On Nov. 30 around 8:15 a.m. a school resource officer discovered a student smoking marijuana on the steps of the school leading to the track. He subsequently arrested three students, transporting Keithen Kortez Jones, Christean Marquelle Cobbs and a juvenile to the Newton County Detention Center. All were charged with drug possession within 1,000 feet of a school and possession of marijuana less than an ounce.
-- On Nov. 30, a student called from home to say she was at a game at Newton High School and had placed her cell phone down and when she turned back around, it was gone. The Apple iPhone4 was valued at $400.
CLEMENTS MIDDLE SCHOOL
-- On Nov. 11 a resource officer was called to Clements Middle School to investigate a verbal altercation between two students.
FLINT HILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
-- On Nov. 29, a parent went to the Newton County Sheriff's Office to report that her son had been assaulted while at Flint Hill Elementary School.
