Covington Police Department Capt. Ken Malcom helps Indian Creek Middle School sixth-grader Brandon Sanders, 12, with his selection of Booker T. and John Cena wrestling action figures as he checks himself out in his new mirror at the "Shop with a Hero" event at Walmart Thursday afternoon. Sanders had to make some tough decisions on just how far his allotted $100 gift card would stretch. Staff with the CPD, the Covington/Newton County 911 Center and the Covington Fire Department were available to lend a helping hand to 33 youngsters who had the opportunity to participate in this year's program. The Covington Public Safety Community met the children at Walmart on Industrial Boulevard for a $100 shopping spree. A surprise guest for the event was a jolly old fellow in a red suit by the name of Santa who spoke with each child before they went into the store to make their selection of gifts. Gift cards were provided by funds from the Covington Police Who Care and a grant from Walmart. - Staff photo by Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith
