COVINGTON -- You may hear beautiful sounds coming from the Early Learning Center playground at the Newton College & Career Academy this school year.
Sound Play, a musical playground equipment company, recently installed a playground preschool music station in the courtyard playground area for prekindergarten students and the early learning center students at the school.
"Music offers great opportunities for communication and expression, for creativity and group cooperation. Plus, it's good for the brain and can enhance learning and intellectual development," said Shelley Yeatman, a Pre-K teacher at the Early Learning Center.
Sound Play owner Bond Anderson, of Parrott in southeast Georgia, installed the station, which students can use everyday.
"They will learn how to create melodies," Yeatman said. "I like that we are supporting the arts in Georgia."
On the day of the install, students already learned how to play music on the station and sang an original song sung to the tune of "Skip to My Lou."
Anderson built the first outdoor musical playground in 1982 in Tifton. His company is only one of a handful in the nation that design and produce musical playgrounds, and his work can be seen from Washington, D.C., to South Korea.
The music station was paid for from capital outlay funds for the NCCA.
