It’s that time of year again and members of the Newton County Fire Service will be out in force beginning Friday, Aug. 31, and continuing until Sunday, Sept. 2, collecting funds for the Georgia Firefighters’ Burn Foundation. Founded in 1982 by a group of DeKalb area firefighters, the burn foundation’s goal is to help burn survivors in their journey of recovery as well as to prevent others from experiencing the traumatic event of a burn injury. The GFBF primary source of fundraising is the annual Give Burns The Boot campaign. The funds go to a variety of worthwhile causes, including Camp OO-U-La especially for children who are burn victims, as well as giving 10 percent of the funds collected in the boot campaign to be used toward local fire safety/burn prevention programs. Look for firefighters with their empty boots at intersections throughout the county.
