Oaks Course, Honey Creek participate in Patriot Day

COVINGTON -- Labor Day weekend is a great time to support children and spouses of the brave men and women who were killed or disabled while serving our country by participating in the Patriot Golf Day at Honey Creek Golf Club and The Oaks Course.

The money collected there and throughout the United States goes to the The Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides educational scholarships for children and spouses of military service men and women who have been killed or disabled.

"It's a great initiative that has grown over the years. As a PGA professional and as a citizen, it's something that's very important to me," The Oaks Course head professional Rex Richardson said. "I've practiced this at all the clubs I've been at. What we do is ask each golfer that comes in to donate as little as $1 on top of their greens fees. They can donate as much as they like. The other important thing is that non-golfers can also participate in this as well.

"So someone that comes in to have lunch or somebody that just feels obligated in the community to make a donation can do that. They can bring a cash donation or they bring a check."

The Patriot Golf Day will start on Friday and will last until the final round on Monday, Sept. 3.

In addition to donations, players at The Oaks Course can also participate in various 18-hole round games such as two-person best ball, scramble, individual gross and net competitions.

"What we'll also be doing is offer a couple of different games that people can sign up for in their tee time. It won't be anything like a shotgun tournament or anything. It'll be like a $10 donation of which $5 will go to the Folds of Honor and the other $5 will go to prizes and gift certificates," Richardson said.

Richardson will also be involved in several games against golfers such as a beat the pro contest. The Oaks Course professional will be at a par-3 hole where, if a player can get it inside Richardson's ball, they will double their donation. Plus, a portion of every golf lesson given starting Monday will go to Folds of Honor as well as a free clinic will be given on Saturday and Sunday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. with all donations going to the foundation.

"It's something we at The Oaks Course are passionate about. As a PGA professional I'm very supportive of player development and Play Golf America initiatives with Patriot Golf Day being one of them," Richardson said. "We're looking forward to a good turnout and hopefully The Oaks Course will be able to make a fair donation."
