Heritage volleyball knocks off Clarke, Salem

CONYERS -- It wasn't easy, but the Heritage volleyball team picked up two wins over some longtime rivals.

Brianna Dafney had 13 kills and Erin White added eight as the Patriots defeated Clarke Central 2-1 to go along with a 2-0 victory over county rival Salem.

In the win over Clarke, the Patriots slipped by with a 25-23 victory in the first game, then dropped a 27-25 decision to even things up. Thanks to Dafney and White, and the serving of Trenetria Steele (five aces in the three games), Heritage won 25-16 in the rubber game.

"I had heard that Clarke Central was one of the best teams in our region so my girls turned it up from the moment they walked on the court," said Patriots coach Julie Kristin. "During the second game, we got caught up on some serve receive errors, but came out with a solid win against them in the end due to some amazing hustles, saves, and teamwork. I'm really proud of my girls."

The Patriots knocked off Salem 25-18 and 25-22 as Steele led the way with six aces.

"We didn't play our best against Salem, but we still came up with the 'W'" Kristin said. "It was a good warmup game before we played Clarke Central."Rogers tosses no-noSalem ace Rylee Rogers pitched a no-hitter in Salem's 8-0 win in five innings over Gainesville on Thursday, continuing a string of dominant performances from the right-hander.

In her past three starts, Rogers hasn't given up an earned run and allowed just three hits and two walks.

Rogers also helped at the plate, driving in a pair of runs, and the trio of Taylor Beauchamp, Whitney Lester and Lane Powell combined to steal five stole bases.
