Newton Sheriff's Office searches for hit-and-run driver

COVINGTON -- Newton County Sheriff's Office deputies are looking for a hit-and-run driver who failed to stop after striking a pedestrian on Ga. Highway 81, South, Wednesday around 8:30 p.m.

A woman who said she'd been hit by a car and needed help called 911 dispatch from her cell phone. NCSO deputies located her on the side of the road at the intersection of Ga. Highway 81, South and Hegwood Drive where she said she fell when struck by the vehicle.

The woman told deputies she was walking towards Baily's BP via Hegwood Drive to buy a soda. She said she had just stepped onto Highway 81, walking southbound on the northbound side of the road, when she was struck by the vehicle. She said the vehicle was heading south on Highway 81 and crossed into the northbound lane and struck her.

She was transported by EMS to Newton Medical Center and complained of leg, neck, back and hip pain, although deputies said she had no visible injuries and her clothing appeared to be in good condition.

Before being taken to the hospital, the woman was unable to give a fuller direction of travel or a description of the vehicle that struck her.

The Sheriff's Office asks that anyone who may have information about this incident contact them at 678-625-1400 or go to their web site at www.newtonsheriffga.org.

This lady was probably walking IN the roadway. Too many pedestrians today risk their lives by walking so close to traffic!!!
