Runoff takes place today

COVINGTON -- Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today for the runoff election.

Voters in District 5 will choose between Ronnie Dimsdale and Levie Maddox to determine who will be the Republican candidate for the Board of Commissioners facing Democrat Marcello Banes in November.

Dimsdale and Maddox tied each other during the general primary with 29.8 percent of the vote, each receiving 740 votes.

Precincts that will vote in the District 5 runoff are Alcovy and portions of City Pond, Covington Mills, Brewers, Cedar Shoals, Livingston, Gum Creek, Leguinn, Mansfield, Oxford and Hub.

There is also a runoff between State House District 113 Democrats Pam Dickerson and Sharon Sawyer. Affected precincts are Town, Almon, Beaverdam, Buck Creek, Cedar Shoals, Stansells, Fairview, Crowell and portions of Covington Mills and Livingston.

A total of 434 ballots have been cast during advance voting -- 239 Democratic and 195 Republican, said Board of Elections Director Donna Morrison. A total of 133 Democratic and 58 Republican absentee ballots have been mailed, with 47 Democratic and 19 Republican received as of 8 a.m. Monday morning.

"I think it will be a light turnout at the polls (today)," Morrison said.

Voters are required to show photo ID when voting. One of the following six forms of identification are acceptable:

-- A Georgia driver's license, even if expired or suspended;

-- Valid state or federal government photo ID;

-- Valid U.S. passport with photo;

-- Valid government employee photo ID (city, county state or U.S. government;

-- Valid U.S. military photo I.D.; and

-- Tribal photo ID.

Results of the runoff election will be posted in the training room across the hall from the Board of Elections office and on the Secretary of State's website.

Voters in the runoff must stick with the same party ticket they voted on in the primary.
