CONYERS -- It's BBQ time in Rockdale County again with the annual United Way BBQ fundraiser set for Thursday.
For the 12th year in a row the United Way will kick off its 2012 campaign with its biggest fundraiser -- a BBQ lunch with all the fixings prepared by Jim 'N' Nick's Bar-B-Q and the culinary arts students at Rockdale Career Academy.
This year, in addition to United Way, the fundraiser will benefit Family Promise of NewRock, an organization of churches that works to help families facing homelessness remain together and regain housing.
United Way Area Director Claire Cline said the goal this year is to sell 2,500 tickets to the luncheon -- 1,000 had already been sold as of Thursday she said.
BBQ plates are $10 each and include Jim 'N' Nick's BBQ, side items, dessert and a drink. Each ticket purchased by Aug. 20 is also entered in a drawing for a gas grill.
The BBQ will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Career Academy, 1064 Culpepper Drive.
Orders of 20 or more plates will be delivered, according to the United Way. Otherwise, patrons can dine in at the Career Academy or pick up their BBQ to go.
Cline said orders of eight or more plates should be placed by noon on Tuesday, Aug. 21. There is no need to order in advance for single plates or fewer than eight plates.
Orders may be placed by calling the United Way at 678-623-2890.
In addition to Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q and Rockdale Career Academy Culinary Arts, other sponsors are Kroger, Coca-Cola, Publix, Lowe's, Atlanta Gas Light, Solo Cup, Georgia Power, Cowan Ace Hardware, E. Smith Box Co., About Conyers Magazine, TK Graphics, Edward Jones Investments, Signarama, Evans Pharmacy and Melwood Springs Water.
