Man beaten, robbed of $19K in items

COVINGTON -- A man was robbed and assaulted at his Ridge Way Pointe Drive home Monday and two suspects got away with nearly $19,000 in stolen goods, according to the Newton County Sheriff's Office.

The incident, which is still under investigation, occurred some time between 3:45 p.m. and 5:25 p.m. Aug. 14, said Newton County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Cortney Morrison.

"Two individuals went to the residence and knocked on the door. When the victim came to the door, he asked who was it, and he heard them mumble something he didn't understand. He cracked the door open to see who it was and one of them pushed the door open and the other jumped on his back and threw a bandana over his face, bound his wrists and ankles and removed items from his residence without permission," Morrison said.

Items taken, according to the NCSO report, included a Chrysler vehicle, valued at $14,900; an I-Mac; cellphone; flat screen TV; speakers and other items with a total estimated value of $18,980.

The man was struck multiple times around the head and face and suffered visible injuries as a result of the assault. Morrison said the victim was not able to provide a description of the suspects.

The man was rescued after his neighbors heard a scream and found him lying near the door.

Evidence collected at the scene is being processed, Morrison said.
