COVINGTON -- The Rockdale-Newton League of Women Voters is hosting three voter registration drives prior to the deadline to register for the November general election.
The events will take place on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Rockdale and Newton counties. Locations are Johnson Park at 1791 Ebenezer Road, Conyers on Aug. 25 and Sept. 29 and the Newton County Library on Sept. 8 located at 7116 Floyd St. in Covington.
"We have registered voters for years and years and we've always had voter registration drives," said Patsy Dorsett-Bullington, communications director for the league. "That's one of the primary aims of leagues all over the country is to register voters. Our league was established in 1982 in Rockdale County and we've been registering voters ever since. We're targeting and trying to get young people and young adults who don't usually vote and don't even know about registration to register."
Anyone who plans to register at these events should bring with them one of the six photo IDs acceptable at the polls during elections. These are:
-- A Georgia driver's license, even if expired or suspended;
-- Valid state or federal government photo ID;
-- Valid U.S. passport with photo;
-- Valid government employee photo ID (city, county state or U.S. government;
-- Valid U.S. military photo I.D.; and
-- Tribal photo ID.
Those who register during these drives will not be eligible to vote in the Aug. 21 runoff but can vote in the Nov. 6 general election.
Early voting for the runoff takes place Monday through Friday at the Newton and Rockdale Board of Elections offices.
In Rockdale and Newton, there will be a runoff for State House District 113 between Pamela Dickerson and Sharon Sawyer. Also in Rockdale, a runoff will take place for State House District 92 between Tonya P. Anderson and Doreen Williams. There's also a nonpartisan runoff between Tony Dowdy and Willie J. Washington for the Post 5 Board of Education seat, which is countywide.
In Newton County, Levie Maddox and Ronnie Dimsdale will square off in the District 5 Board of Commissioners race.
Not all voters in the counties are included in these districts. Check your precinct card, visit the Secretary of state's website at www.sos.ga.gov and click on My Voter Page or call your local Board of Elections office to check whether your precinct is involved in the runoff.
Residents must have been registered to vote by July 2 to vote in the runoff. They did not have to vote in the primary election on July 31 to vote in the runoff, but those who did have to vote on the same party ballot as the primary.
