Covington PD: Stepdaughter and stepfather face aggravated assault charges

COVINGTON -- A stepdaughter visiting from out-of-town and her stepfather are both now facing charges of aggravated assault with a knife following a fight which apparently began over laundry, according to the Covington Police Department.

Antonette E. Glass, 24, of 2302 U.S. Highway 60 E., Morganfield, Ky., was arrested Tuesday night following the incident at 6194 Green Acres Drive. Clifford Smith, of the Green Acres Drive address, will have warrants taken for aggravated assault pending his release from Grady Memorial Hospital where he was taken Tuesday night.

The CPD incident report on the fight indicates that 911 dispatchers first received a call stating there was someone with a knife at 6194 Green Acres Drive trying to stab someone. They were then told by the caller that her father had gotten into a fight, was stabbed and was bleeding badly. The caller next said the argument was still going on and she was unsure if her father had actually been stabbed, but he had been drinking and was lying down outside. The caller then stated that her father was bleeding and that he had not been stabbed, but was bleeding because her boyfriend had hit him.

When officers arrived, they found a female, who was later identified as Antoinette Glass, who had blood all over her upper body and her clothing.

"I asked Glass what happened and she stated, 'He didn't get stabbed,' and handed me a closed pocket knife," the incident report states. "I asked who was hurt and Glass stated she and her sister had been cut (and) then pointed to her stepfather (Clifton Smith)."

As it turned out, all parties involved in the incident received cuts to their hands, while Smith's most severe injuries were primarily due to him being struck, according to CPD Public Information Officer Ken Malcom.

The report indicates officers observed Smith on the ground under the carport in a pool of blood.

"Smith was bleeding from the nose and mouth. He was coughing up blood and had lost a tooth," the report states, adding that Smith was having trouble breathing and when EMS arrived they determined he would need to be transported to trauma center.

The incident report states that Glass said she and her boyfriend were visiting her mother, who was at work and not at home at the time of the incident, and that she and Smith have a history as "he did not like her because she was not his child." She said Smith got drunk and when she went into the laundry room, Smith said, "Hell naw," and asked, "Do you wanna die?"

Glass said she replied, "You don't wanna start this tonight."

According to the incident report, Glass said Smith went to the kitchen and got a knife.

"Glass stated she carried a pocket knife for defense when she was around Smith because Smith had threatened her and her mother with a knife before and he had also shot a gun through the house," the report states. "Glass stated she had her pocket knife in her hand when Smith came at her with the kitchen knife. Glass stated she and her 15-year-old sister tried to take the knife from Smith and got cut on her hand. Glass stated her boyfriend punched Smith and threw him outside. Glass stated she did not know what happened to the kitchen knife but she thought her 15-year-old sister had picked it up."

Statements given by the sister and the boyfriend backed up Glass' version of events. The younger sister said she, too, was cut in trying to take the kitchen knife away from Smith. She also stated she put it back in the kitchen drawer and showed officers where she had put it.

Both the pocket knife owned by Glass and the 18-inch kitchen knife had blood on them and were placed into evidence, the report states.

The boyfriend, who apparently struck Smith in an effort to defend the two girls, said he hit him three times, was not charged.

aggravated is spelled wrong in the headline. I remember watching a TV Show titled Green Acres after reading this story I would say that the Douglas's have probably moved, Mr Drucker closed his store because it kept getting robbed. The song said ...Green Acres is the place to be ......NOT !

No mistaking this for Green Acres. More like Drama 101, and I'm not talking about acting classes...

I just have one question and I am sure that there is more to this story, BUT, if Ms Glass was defending herself--Why was she charged? The report states Ms "Glass stated she had her pocket knife in her hand when Smith came at her with the kitchen knife. Glass stated she and her 15-year-old sister tried to take the knife from Smith and got cut on her hand. Glass stated her boyfriend punched Smith and threw him outside. Glass stated she did not know what happened to the kitchen knife but she thought her 15-year-old sister had picked it up." That sounds like self defense on her part to me. He approached her with the knife, she defended herself with like force.
