CONYERS -- Local author and columnist for the Citizen Darrell Huckaby will speak Thursday as part of the National Day of Prayer.
Huckaby will speak at 11:30 a.m. at Conyers First United Methodist Church in Olde Town.
According to William George, spokesman for the event, the church will be open for prayer beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday until 6 p.m. George said there will be a luncheon following the 11:30 a.m. service.
"Everyone is definitely invited," he said.
According to the National Day of Prayer website, Thursday will be the 61st annual observance of the National Day of Prayer. This year's theme, One Nation Under God, is based on Psalm 33:12: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord."
According to the website, in 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual, national day of prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May. Each year, the president signs a proclamation, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day. Last year, all 50 state governors plus the governors of several U.S. territories signed similar proclamations.
