Letter: Don Ballard created a positive legacy

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I offer thanks to your staff reporter Crystal Tatum on her exceptional profile article on Covington lawyer Don Ballard, who recently celebrated his 85th birthday and marked his 60th year in the practice of law.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading of Mr. Ballard's extraordinary career, during which he has tried thousands of civil and criminal cases while devoting a large portion of his practice to serving as legal counsel to a number of local governmental entities in his home county of Newton, especially the city of Oxford (52 years) and the city of Mansfield (40 years).

Along with his service as a Navy veteran of World War II, as a former member of the Georgia General Assembly and service to his church and numerous civic organizations, Mr. Ballard's contributions have already left a positive, lasting impact on his community, state and nation.

Don Ballard's distinguished career stands as an inspiration to all Georgia lawyers as we seek to fulfill both our duty to help others and our high calling as stewards of the justice system. We wish Don and his wife Mary many years of continued good health and enjoyment of life.
