COVINGTON - The Newton County Community Band will celebrate spring with its annual Spring Concert, to take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Eastside High School Auditorium.
This is the 19th year for the event, and this year, "I think we have a full menu for our band. We have a selection of appetizers, entrees and we have our desserts," said Director T.K. Adams.
Adams lists the appetizers as "Triumphant Fanfare" and "To Realms of Endless Day." Those will be followed by the entrees: Ludwig vanBeethoven's "Symphony No. 5;" Wolfgang Mozart's "Overture to the Marriage of Figaro;" and Richard Strauss' "Die Nacht." For dessert is Dmitri Shostakovich's "Folk Dances;" Gustav Holst's "Morris Dance Tunes;" and the march "Pretissimo."
The Community Band is welcoming Atlanta Symphony Orchestra trombone player Stephen Wilson for this concert. Wilson is retiring from the Atlanta orchestra in August and has already moved to Covington, and will become a regular member of the Community Band. Other guests will include students from the University of Georgia's Percussion Department along with Adams' son, Percussion Department Chair Timothy Adams Jr.
The concert is free and open to the public. An oral history of the musical selections will be provided by Latrelle Oliver prior to the concert at 7:10 p.m.
Adams said the band has grown by several members recently and residents of Newton and surrounding counties are welcome to join. Rehearsals will begin for the next concert, on July 4, on Monday, May 21, and will continue every Monday until the concert date. Rehearsals take place from 7-8:30 p.m. at Eastide High School Auditorium. For more information, contact Adams at 770-786-4816.
