Pets available for adoption this week in Newton and Rockdale counties

This happy fella is waiting as patiently as he can for a new home and a new owner. He's been named Jo-Jo and is obviously a terrier-mix with naturally blond hair. He weighs about 15 pounds and is between 1 and 2 years old and would make a wonderful addition to any family. He can be rescued and adopted at Newton County Animal Shelter, located at 210 Lower River Road in Covington. The shelter usually has between 20 to 30 dogs and an equal number of cats eligible for adoption. The adoption fee for a dog or puppy is $25 and $10 for a cat or kitten. Spaying/neutering is mandatory for all animals. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-786-9514. Anyone who has lost a pet is urged to go to the center and bring a photo of the missing animal. - Staff photos by Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith

Pogo is a male terrier-mix, approximately 18 months old, with unusual brindle coloring. Found as a stray, he would just love to settle down at a home with plenty of water for a hot, panting dog and lots of love to go around. He can be rescued and adopted at Rockdale County Animal Care and Control Shelter at 1506 Rockbridge Road in Conyers. At the Rockdale shelter adoption fees for dogs are $30 and $20 for cats. Spaying or neutering is required for adoption. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-278-8403.

Questions to ask before adopting a pet:

-- Can I make a long-term commitment to this pet?

-- Will I be able to spend enough time with a new pet?

-- Am I prepared for the cost a new pet will bring?

-- Which pet is right for my home and my family?
