Newton Citizen Poll for April 15, 2012

The Newton Citizen Poll is a compilation of opinions submitted by readers. They do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Citizen newspapers. If you agree or disagree with something you read here, you may respond by emailing poll@newtoncitizen.com or call 770-787-7303, ext. 1101. Please remember that the Citizen Poll is not a forum for comments either for or in opposition to candidates seeking elective office."OK, I'm not really in the political loop like I'd like and should be so I'm asking the citizens of Newton County that pay close attention to the candidates running for county seats. Is there a candidate out there that feels that the law enforcement budget is a priority over tracks, parks and other projects? You have to put the safety of the citizens first before all else because if you're too scared to walk around your own block then who wants to go to park or trails or anywhere for that matter. The Sheriff's Department needs help and you have to remember this, it's not just how many cars you got patrolling the streets but the type of officers your Sheriff's Department is attracting. You basically pay for what you get just like everything else. If your pay is low, you lose good people and gain not-so-good people. So, I would like to hear your suggestions on who to vote for so we can turn this county back to a decent place to live."

"If you're concerned about the semi-trucks parked at McDonald's off Brown Bridge and Salem, what you have to do is email the corporate office of the trucking company and explain to them your safety concern. I have done it already to one company and I haven't seen that company's trucks parked there since. Be sure to write down the number that's on the truck itself so they can identify the driver. The Sheriff's Department can't do anything unless McDonald's calls them about that situation because it's private property.

"You know the paper could give a little more respect in the obituaries. Can't even read my about my love one with out ads popping up ... show some respect."

"A few weeks ago Obama announced that Congress was being uncooperative, so he would have to go it alone with executive orders to make changes he wanted for America. By his actions in the last few days, he is also stating that the Supreme Court doesn't count either. His primary goal is to make himself the only branch of government standing. It has now begun. The Supreme Court has not even ruled yet on the constitutionality of Obamacare, yet Obama has sent $500 million to IRS so they can implement his Obamacare. What audacity he has! Dictatorship here we come. America -- Wake Up! Is this the world you want to live in? I certainly don't. True American Patriots, God-fearing, Constitution and Declaration of Independence believers must unite. We must make sure that all those who believe as we do, go to the polls and let their voices be heard loud and clear on Nov. 6, 2012. Contact everyone you know that we can and must make this happen. Obama's attack on our freedoms has been going on much too long. He must be stopped now!"

"What's become of our society? Our youth? Our parenting? Children used to dream of being able to go to middle school instead of working in factories, let alone high school. Why has the parenting become so laissez-faire that our teens no longer wish to learn and become educated? Why has the 'education' system lowered its standards simply to accommodate for the lacking of our generation? Why is our society sacrificing education and knowledge for the sake of schooling? Our dropout rates are decreasing, but each teenage generation as a whole seems to care less about education than the previous. I know what the atmosphere is like; I'm there, these kids don't have any desire to be here. Why force them to do something they don't want to do? The parenting today kills me. While we do need self-motivation as students, why have parents come to accept perennial failing grades and misbehavior? Whatever happened to discipline and consequences? The parents in this country need to step up and take control of their children. I'm not saying to breathe down their necks about everything and anything in their lives, but at least show some concern for their academia and overall well-being. Is it really that hard to care about your child? Motivation in many high schools, particularly in Georgia, seems to have become close to none."

"The Georgia Legislature has no shame! Did you know that in 2008 the Republicans in the state legislature passed legislation allowing individuals and corporations to contribute large sums of money to fund private school scholarships and then receive a dollar-for-dollar state tax credit? You get to specify the school to benefit from your benevolence and to sweeten the deal you can also receive federal tax deductions. How nice is that? Don't you love free enterprise and socialism for the wealthy? Personally, I believe in supporting our public schools. If we do not improve the Georgia schools especially in Rockdale and Newton counties our homes will continue to depreciate."

"I was overjoyed to see there are changes coming with the Miracle League Field and begin construction in August. My children have been playing Miracle League in Rockdale County for eight years. It's the greatest blessings to ever come our way. Real heroes get on that field on Saturdays. They play. They overcome their obstacles. They enjoy themselves. There's no bickering, no commenting on who's better than the other one. They're like a team, like a family. I love my Miracle League family and I can't wait to get Miracle League in Newton County. Any of you out there who've never been to a Miracle League game, come on Saturday mornings to Rockdale's Legion Field and come to the Miracle League field. You'll see real baseball game with real heroes playing baseball."

"My grandson Joshua has been locked up since Feb. 14, 2012. He's been denied one of the insulins he's supposed to take since that day. As a result of him not getting his shot, his blood sugar has stayed in the 300 or 400 mark. This is very dangerous for him and could result in his internal organs shutting down. There's been times he's even been denied toilet paper. Does not our tax dollars not go for this also? Please pray for him."

Where is your grandson Joshua locked up? The county jail? Perhaps they can only maintain his medical condtion at this point instead of treating it due to the budget cutbacks. Then again, if he has been locked up that long and he has not been granted bail, perhaps the charge is a serious charge, perhaps he should have considered his medical condtion before putting himself in a position where he was charged with a crime (notice I did not say that he committed the crime, merely that he has been charged).

Funny I was thinking the same thing. I have some health issues and I know better than to commit a crime that would send me to jail because common sense tells me I won't get the same treatment in jail as I would at home. I do feel sorry for the grandma because that's still her grandson but I do not feel sorry for the grandson.

If he needed the insulin, the jailers/nursing staff would give it to him. That's a load of crap!

Yes-the jailers/nursing staff would give him the proper medicine for his condition. I am also delighted my tax dollars can pay for his lodging, food, and medical care. The lesson here is simple- don't do something to get yourself put in jail!!

Well, chances are that if you're a Newton County resident you've been to jail yourself at least once, that or you're receiving EBT funds, or unemployment or some other type of assistance and MY tax dollars in one form or fashion, so just shut up.

I can honestly say that I have never been to jail, nor have I ever received any form of assistance.

Sorry Grandma, I don't have much sympathy for prisoners. I mean, yes I value human life and all that but first of all I don't believe he is being denied his meds and second of all, prison is supposed to be tough so you won't go back. Don't do the crime and all that stuff. Sure he might be suffering but I'm sure the victim(s) of his crime is too. And I'm sure he's getting plenty of injections in prison, and toilet paper too!
