COVINGTON -- Want your kid to be healthy and happy? So does the Covington Family YMCA. That's why, for the 11th consecutive year, the YMCA is partnering with General Mills to host the Cheerios Challenge and celebrate national Happy Healthy Kids Day.
This year's event takes place Saturday, April 21, at the YMCA at 2140 Newton Drive. The Cheerios Challenge includes a 10K and 5K road race along with a 1-mile fun run/walk for all ages. The Cheerios Challenge is U.S.A. Track and Field certified and a Peachtree Road Race qualifier.
The 10K begins at 7:30 a.m., the 1-mile fun run/walk will be at 9 a.m. and the 5K at 9:30 a.m.
Winners in each age group will receive ribbons.
"Participation in this event has grown tremendously in these 11 years," said Kacie Brown, YMCA membership director. "It is an exciting day for the YMCA and for our community. In 2011 we had a great turnout of runners and walkers and are expecting even more participants in 2012. We appreciate the the hard work of our 92 volunteers who come out to make this event possible. The excitement and support around the Covington Cheerios Challenge is contagious."
In addition to the races, there will be health-focused vendors present, inflatables and other activities for kids.
"This is something fun for the entire family to come out and participate. There's something for serious runners that are big into running, for mom or dad, and there's something as well for kids," said Brown said.
Pre-registration runs through Friday and the cost is $15 for the 10K/5K and $12 for the fun run. On race day, registration will be $20 for the 5K/10K and $15 for the fun run.
