COVINGTON -- The latest installment of the "American Pie" movie series that was filmed entirely in Georgia last year was released in theaters Friday.
"American Reunion," which is part of the "American Pie" series that began in 1999, was filmed in such metro Atlanta cities as Conyers, Covington, Monroe and Druid Hills over the summer.
The movie's producer Craig Perry said economic considerations brought the movie here. Georgia has offered tax incentives to film productions that choose to use the state as a backdrop in their movies.
Already Covington has been used as a filming location for the "Vampire Diaries" television series and a remake of the movie "Footloose," and Conyers recently has been a filming location for the TV show remake of the '80s movie, "Teen Wolf," and movies like "Joyful Noise," starring Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton, and the Clint Eastwood movie "Trouble With the Curve."
Many Georgia residents were used as extras and crew members in the "American Reunion" shots. Scenes were filmed at Newton High School, Heritage High School, Olde Town Conyers, Costley Mill Park and downtown Monroe, among other places around the state.
Scenes from the Newton High School shot in the gym were used in the movie's trailer.
Perry, who worked on the previous three "American Pie" theatrical movies as well as the "Final Destination" series, said over the summer that this film in many ways has a similar tone to the original movie. He said there's no big revelation in the movie -- it's just about life.
All of the major cast members -- Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas and Eddie Kaye Thomas -- returned for the film, as did as many of the supporting cast members, like Alyson Hannigan, Shannon Elizabeth, Mena Suvari, Tara Reid and even Jennifer Coolidge as Stifler's mom and Eugene Levy as Jim's dad.
Perry said at the time that he didn't know if this film would be the last time the cast is together again. After all, the last "American Pie" film, "American Wedding," was released in 2003.
Reunion Committee LLC paid for use of school facilities, and the company donated two truckloads of high-end plants to the Rockdale Career Academy, which used them in class instruction and projects in nursery and landscaping classes.
