Free kids fishing event set for Saturday

COVINGTON -- A free kids fishing event will be hosted by the Georgia FFA-FCCLA Center and the Junior Bass Busters Club of Covington this Saturday.

The event is open to kids age 16 and under and their parents and will take place from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Hayes-Outz Pavilion at the center, located off Ga. Highway 36.

The event is held twice yearly.

"We just do them as an opportunity for kids to come out and fish. We've talked to a lot of parents that say kids don't have anywhere to fish for free," said Leroy Bagley, educational program specialist with the FFA-FCCLA Center.

Kids should bring their own poles and gear; bait will be provided. Door prizes such as tackle boxes, T-shirts and hats will be handed out and awards will be given to the kids who catch the most fish from the pre-stocked pond loaded with catfish and bream. The event is catch and release.

A hot dog lunch will be provided.

Adult supervision is required for each child.

"It's a good opportunity for parents to spend doing something with their kids that's constructive," Bagley said.
