COVINGTON -- A 34-year-old woman who was serving time on the weekends at Newton County Detention Center died while in custody over the weekend.
Yolanda Polk Smith of 460 Alcovy Way, was found dead by the detention staff at the jail Saturday morning, according to Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis.
"We don't suspect any foul play. Her body was sent to the GBI state medical examiner's office by the coroner's office for autopsy and the results are pending," Davis said. "Right now the cause and manner of death is pending."
Davis said Smith "did have some medical history and that's probably going to be a factor."
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death as is customary in matters concerning a local law enforcement agency. Public Information Officer John Bankhead said so far their investigation has shown that Smith died a natural death.
"The autopsy showed no signs of trauma. The results of toxicology tests are pending," he said.
