Arts In Motion 5K run set for Olde Town Conyers

CONYERS -- The first Arts In Motion 5K road race Saturday morning will offer a chance to take on a challenging course in Olde Town Conyers while also supporting the arts in the community.

The race, which is planned to be an annual event, will start at Evans Pharmacy at the corner of Main and Center streets with a 1-mile fun run for children 12 and under at 8:30 a.m. followed by the 5K race at 9 a.m. Registration is $25 and participants can pre-register through Wednesday at www.active.com or can register on race day. The day of the race there will also be a no T-shirt option registration of $15. County school students can pay $5 to register or $10 to receive a T-shirt.

All proceeds go to support programs of the Conyers-Rockdale Council for the Arts.

The 5K run is a first for CRCA as the arts organization finds new ways to raise funding. Earlier this year, CRCA held a dunking booth community event with Rockdale County Commissioner JaNice Van Ness and Conyers Mayor Randy Mills. Last year, CRCA raffled off a television set at the Conyers Fall Festival, which they plan to do again next month.

CRCA Executive Director Jackie Sprague hopes the fund raising efforts help to raise awareness of the Arts Council along with needed funding.

"This is something we've never done before, and we're enjoying bringing new things to the community," she said. "Members of the community can make this a family outing while keeping the arts alive in Conyers and Rockdale County."

The race will be run on an "in and out" course where runners will return on the same route to the finish line at the Center Street Arts Center.

The runners will depart from Evans Pharmacy at the corner of Center and Main streets and travel down Railroad Street to North Avenue and cross over Main Street to College Avenue and Springwood Drive. Runners will turn back at the end of Springwood and follow the course back to the finish line.

All runners will receive a goodie bag that includes coupons for a free waffle at participating Waffle Houses and a free ice cream at Evans Pharmacy.
