CONYERS -- You can enjoy a special lunch while helping out local teachers next week.
Outback Steakhouse in Conyers will open at a special time -- from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Thursday -- for a fundraiser for the Foundation for Excellence in Education, which supports teachers in Rockdale County Public Schools.
Usually, the restaurant, which is located at 1188 Dogwood Drive in Conyers, doesn't open for lunch.
Lindsey Preiss, co-president of the foundation, said 70 percent of the proceeds will go toward the foundation.
"This is money going toward educational projects not covered by the budget of Rockdale County Public Schools," she said.
The event costs $10 per person; only cash or check will be accepted.
Lunch is served buffet style and includes sirloin or chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, caesar salad, bread and tea or soda with free drink refills.
Space is limited to the first 250 people who register online at www.rockfee.org or show up at the event.
Preiss said usually the event is held on a teacher work day so school employees can attend, but this year that was not possible.
"It would be great to get more community support this year" in order to raise enough money, she said.
Each year, the foundation awards about $10,000 each year in mini-grants to teachers who apply for them, she said.
The foundation formed in 1988 and holds various fundraisers throughout the year. It also supports the Teacher of the Year Program and other educational initiatives.
More information about the event and the foundation is available on its website, www.rockfee.org.
