Alcovy mercy rule's Griffin 9-1 in home closer

COVINGTON -- The Lady Tigers gave Griffin all they could handle on the diamond for Senior Night as Alcovy closed its final game at home with a mercy-rule win on Tuesday.

Alcovy finished off the Lady Bears with a 9-1, six inning win giving lone senior Samantha Cronan something to be happy about after playing her last regular season game at home.

"It's nice to get the win on senior night and our last home game," Alcovy head coach Monica Marks said.

The Lady Tigers didn't get too many hits but they made up for it by being aggressive whenever they got on base with hits, walks or errors.

Alcovy finished the game with six hits while being walked seven times and reaching four more times as a result of errors.

"We've been working on when teams make errors; let's take an extra base. We've been aggressive as far as the base path and when they make a mistake we take advantage of it," Marks said. "We got a couple of hits to put the nail in coffin, so to speak. But you still have to take advantage of those opportunities."

Morgan Beshears and Holley Murphy paced the Lady Tigers with two hits each, Beshears also had the team's only extra base hit hitting two-run triple in the sixth inning.

The other two hits were by Lakeiyah Sorrells and Jordan Hilty.

The Lady Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before expanding their lead to 5-0 in the second. After allowing the Lady Bears to close the gap to make it 5-1 in the top of the third, Alcovy scored again in the fourth before scoring the needed runs in the sixth.

In fitting fashion, Beshears scored the game-ending run on a Murphy sacrifice grounder.

Getting the win pitching six innings and only giving up one hit while striking out six batters was Chelsea Murphy.

"We played pretty solid behind Chelsea. She pitched pretty well." Marks said. "It was an all around good game."
