Sept. 18 Newton Citizen Poll

"What would you think if you had been serving in the U.S. Armed Forces for 10 years and one day Congress said the U.S. was in a recession and there was a severe downturn in the amount of tax revenue. As a result, Congress had to make some 'hard decisions'. Soldiers were already engaged in fighting, getting shot and seriously injured during battles to protect the United States, but Congress did not care. The 'hard decisions' Congress made was that it was more important to them to fund pet projects in each Congressional district than it was to properly fund the military. Plus, Congress needed additional money to operate and maintain all those new pork barrel projects. Congress cut the Army's funding to force the Army to lay off soldiers. The Army would have to get by with fewer soldiers and our Congressmen did not care how. The cuts came and the remaining soldiers had to fight harder to protect themselves and their area of responsibility. Congress did not care how the cuts were made or if the military was properly staffed or equipped. Congress then decided that these cuts were not enough and they should cut the troops even more. The message to the soldiers was clear. Congress did not think you were worth what they were being paying you in the first place so Congress was cutting your pay and benefits even more. Congress cut soldiers' retirement benefits by 40 percent, cut soldiers pay by over 5 percent and in addition Congress cut all soldiers' incentives and overtime out completely. Through no fault of their own, U.S. soldiers were now the lowest paid in the free world. Do you think it right to treat U.S. Armed Forces personnel in this way? Well, that is exactly the way that your Newton County Commissioners have treated the Newton County Fire Service and the Sheriff's Department. If a single Newton County Commissioner praises a firefighter or a deputy sheriff during this 09/11 period, you now know the truth."----

"In your opening paragraph for the Newton Citizen Poll it is written 'Comments, which may be edited for space or content, are published anonymously on Saturday.' Well, the last two postings have been on Sept. 4 and 11 which are Sundays. One of two things needs to happen a.) revise the above statement or b.) 'giter done' as stated and has been the practice for sometime. FYI the Rockdale Citizen only messed up on Sept. 11 posting, instead of Sept 10.

To the guy with his 'wild and unique' cat theory. First, I am not a cat lover or even a horse lover. But cats have been domesticated and there are people that love cats, not an issue. Our world has many choices, one can choose what they like that should not be a problem for others that won't make the same choice -- as long as it is legal. I have had dogs most of my life -- have two mixed breeds now, they were 'abandoned' as puppies at about 6 weeks old. If you look into the history of dogs, they were originally raised to be hunters as in beagles, spaniels, basset hounds, terriers, dachshunds, setters, retrievers, labs, etc. or livestock herders -- collies, border collies, etc. or animals that 'worked' outside. Over time they became 'domesticated,' brought into homes and bred exotically into 'unique' breeds but most still retained the urge to be 'free,' it is in their genes. Domesticated dogs that have been 'turned loose' by their 'irresponsible' owners will 'pack-up' and revert back to their natural instincts and become wild in their hunt for food and water. I grew-up on a farm and often had dogs 'gone wild' pack up and tried to raid our chicken house/pen ... it was necessary to put them down."----

"Spin it however you want buddy you are a cat hater -- millions of people enjoy their 'inside the house cats.' They can give as much or more pleasure then a dog. Glad you're not my neighbor!"----

"Just wanted to thank the Covington Police Department for a great Fuzz Run. My family had a wonderful time and can't wait to take part next year"----

"Thanks again to the City of Covington and the Covington Police for another great Fuzz Run. This was my daughter's first and she really enjoyed it. I hate it when I read people complaining about this and other events. Come on people, get involved and have fun. I too live in an area that is always used for these types of events but I understand the need and welcome it. We choose to become involved and take part in these events. Guess some people are self-centered and only see how things affect them."----

"As I stood on the Square today with our local public service men and women to honor those who were killed on 9-11-2001, I thought back to several postings I had seen in City Poll lately and how people were bashing our local public service. It just made me sick to my stomach. As I looked around and saw several of our local servants with tears in their eyes for men and women they never even knew. But they knew they would have done the same thing they had done on that day if in their shoes. I would like to thank all of you for what you do for my family and our community every day. May God always be with you."

Has anyone else noticed that Solid Rock Baptist is endorsing Bobby Sigman. Interesting how they are trying to do it discreetly by putting the sign on the edge of their property up at the right of way. Hmmmmmm........is this seperation of church and state?

Solid Rock is not endorsing Mr. Sigman. The only endorsement of Solid Rock is Jesus Christ. The property where the sign is located on is Mr. Long's. If it is in the right of way then that is for the City of Covington to enforce not the church. Back two years ago there was an Obama campaign sign in the same location and I can assure Solid Rock did not endorse that. By the way the church is having Revival this week so why don't you come visit. There are several great things happening in that church.

So - a volunteer clinic helping the uninsured, and "I can assure Solid Rock did not endorse that", referring to a president who wants to help the uninsured. Brilliant!

The only endorsement that I see when I drive by there is a White Cross on a Steple. Willing Helpers Medical Clinic was in place prior to Obama and helping the uninsured without government assistance is a great idea. This clinic helps provide a service to the communtiy and reduce the non-emergancy patients with basic health care. I am proud that a church is helping the local people that need it and religion is not a pre-requsite for assistance. However you do have to have a scheduled appointment to be seen. Do Not just show up and expect to be seen by a doctor there is a waiting period because the need is far greater then the supply of doctors. I hear there is quite a bit going on over at Solid Rock Baptist Church. I might just have to check it out for myself maybe I will see you there.
