A 53-year-old Bishop man was killed in the early morning hours Thursday after he attempted to exit Interstate 20 at a high rate of speed and lost control of his vehicle, according to the Georgia State Patrol.
Capt. Paul Cosper said Dale D. Dion was driving eastbound on I-20 at about 12:25 a.m. when he attempted to exit at State Route 12 at a high rate of speed.
“He traveled through the gore and at that speed he misjudged it and he hit two of those marker sign poles and continued onto the ramp and overcorrected,” Cosper said.
That caused Dion’s car to rotate and overturn several times.
Cosper said the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected through the sunroof of the 2004 Pontiac Sunfire he was driving. Dion was the only occupant of the car.
Cosper said that blood test results are pending, but officials suspect alcohol was a factor in the accident.
