CONYERS -- Organizers are planning to use the Rockdale GOP's Constitution Day celebration Saturday as a launching pad for a Rockdale Young Republicans Club. The Constitution Day event is slated for 10 a.m. to noon at Pine Log Park.
Organizer C.J. Lester said he his looking to have at least 10 young Republicans sign up for the organization, which is how many are needed to establish a charter, he said. Young Republicans are those age 18 to 40. The organization will be separate from the Rockdale Republican Party.
Lester, 22, said he first became interested in politics through his work with Rockdale resident Edward Tracey.
"I worked with (Tracey) on his website," said Lester. "He really got me started in politics and I joined the Rockdale Republican Party. I've been doing this since March, so I just recently got started."
Lester envisions the Rockdale Young Republicans doing some charitable work in the community. The first project he'd like the club to tackle is a food drive to support other local organizations, such as Meals on Wheels.
Lester said annual dues for the Rockdale Young Republicans Club will be $15 for an individual and $25 for a couple. He said he is exploring the possibility of establishing an honorary membership status for older members.
Anyone interested in joining the Rockdale Young Republicans should contact Lester at firstname.lastname@example.org. Commitment forms can be found and completed at www.rockdaleyr.weebly.com. The organization plans to hold its first meeting Oct. 20, 6:15 p.m., at Ruby Tuesday in Conyers.
