Rockdale youngster remains in critical condition

CONYERS -- A 10-year-old boy injured in a car accident when his father allegedly fled from police remains in critical condition on life support at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, according to the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office.

Alex Fowlin was injured Saturday night when the car driven by his father, Andrew Fowlin, 39, of Conyers, crashed into a culvert on Gees Mill Road. The suspect's father, 75-year-old Richard Alophus Fowlin, also a passenger in the car, was killed in the accident.

According to RCSO Investigator Michael Camp, Andrew Fowlin was pulled over at about 10:15 p.m. Saturday in a road check on Sigman Road conducted by the RCSO. The suspect reportedly told deputies that he did not have his driver's license with him. When deputies asked him to pull over to the side of the road, he turned off his headlights and fled at a high rate of speed, Camp said.

Deputies pursued the 2003 Jaguar but were unable to catch up to the fleeing vehicle. They found the car crashed into a concrete culvert on Gees Mill Road. According to the Georgia State Patrol, which is investigating the accident, Fowlin lost control of the car in a curve, hit several large boulders and overturned.

Alex Fowlin, a passenger in the rear seat, and Richard Fowlin, in the front seat, were trapped inside the vehicle. Andrew Fowlin allegedly fled the accident scene on foot but was caught by deputies a short time later.

Richard Fowlin was pronounced dead at the scene; Alex Fowlin was transported to Egleston via air ambulance.

Camp said that Andrew Fowlin's driver's license was issued in a false name, but jailers were able to accurately identify him through fingerprints associated with his real name. Camp said that Fowlin had previous arrests in New York and Connecticut. He remains in the Rockdale Jail on $17,000 bond on the misdemeanor charges against him. Camp said no bond has been set on the felony charges against the suspect.

Fowlin is charged with one count of first degree vehicular homicide, failure to maintain lane, reckless driving, driving while unlicensed, fleeing and attempting to elude, improper headlights, willful obstruction of a law enforcement officer, forgery and giving a false name.
