The Newton boys cross country team had a dominant Wednesday afternoon. Led by individual champion Alex Grady, the Rams out-distanced second-place Locust Grove in a regular season meet at Rockdale High School. Grady ran in 17:30, 16 seconds better than teammate and second-place Thomas Miller (17:46), while Shamar Rannie finished fourth at 19:11 to pace the Rams. Newton also had a seventh-place finisher in Sean McDuffie (19:21) and an 11th place runner in Jose Rivera (20:12).
On the girls side, Alcovy finished a close second to Locust Grove, thanks to a trio of strong finishers. Elizabeth Smith led the way with a third-place finish (24:58), while Alexis Emanuel was fourth (25:47) and Heather Wilson was fifth (25:49).
Demonte Ivey led the third-place Alcovy boys with a 19:10 to place third, while Rockdale's top boys finishers were ninth-place Jacob Culver (19:49) and 10th-place patrick Massee (19:56). The Newton girls got a ninth-place time from LaRabin Spencer (27:26) and a 10th-place time from Brittany Banks (27:29). The Rockdale girls were led by Kyia Havens, who finished sixth at 26:11.-- from staff reports
