COVINGTON -- Covington Police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation have arrested four young suspects in connection with the beating death of 59-year-old Fred Layne Beeler. The West Street resident was attacked in his home late Saturday night and CPD officers found him clinging to life after he had been beaten multiple times in the head.

"Officers went to the home at 5187 West St. and discovered that the carport door had been kicked in. When they entered the residence, they found a man lying on a couch who had been struck multiple times in the face with an object," said CPD spokesman Capt. Ken Malcom. "He was airlifted to Atlanta Medical Center and died about 4:30 Sunday morning. He never regained consciousness."

Malcom said CPD detectives and agents with the GBI worked around the clock on the home invasion and by Sunday their investigation led them to have probable cause to arrest the four suspects, two of whom are from Conyers and two of whom are from Jonesboro.

Arrested and charged with murder, burglary and armed robbery in connection with the home invasion are Shane Deforest Winter, 21, and Justin Lee Bennett, 19, both of whom live at 2290 Briarwood Circle, Conyers; Preston Ranard Mayson, 21, of 10168 Port Royal Court, Jonesboro; and Shavarious Jawan Moses, 17, of 10095 Commons Way, Jonesboro.

"This was not a random act. Mr. Beeler was the intended victim. There were no drugs involved," Malcom said, adding that the victim was known to allegedly have cash at his residence and at least one of the suspects knew him. "Robbery was the motive with this."
