Oxford soccer team captures first win

OXFORD -- The Oxford College women's soccer team recorded its first victory of the season Thursday evening, defeating Tennessee-Temple 1-0 at Bivings Field.

The only score in the game came in the first half on an own goal by the visiting Lady Crusaders. The Oxford College Athletics page on Facebook reported that freshman Kaylsea Lovan was credited with the goal off an assist from fellow freshman Tiffany Bien.

"The girls played out of their minds; it was unbelievable," said Oxford coach Gregory Moss-Brown of the Lady Eagles. "This is my second year as coach and tonight was by far the most impressive game I've seen us play. It was a challenge for the team, because we had limited numbers, but it was a real team effort.

"They made a mistake and we capitalized. All in all, it was an absolutely brilliant game. Their coach told me it was the best game they'd played. It was a good match-up."

Sophomore Willa Brooks recorded a dozen saves for Oxford College, an NJCAA Division III school; Tennessee-Temple is a Division I school from the Mid-East Region of the National Christian College Athletic Association.

"Willa made some fantastic saves," said Moss-Brown. "She was a rock on defense."

The Lady Eagles (1-1) return to action at 6 p.m. Saturday, facing Andrews College in Cuthbert. Oxford College's next home game is set for 6 p.m. on Sept. 11 against Andrews College.
