One cross country runner in Rockdale County is going to run one more race.
Salem's Gabriel Alvarez finished second at last weekend's Region 8-AAAA meet at Georgia International Horse Park, qualifying for the Class AAAA state meet on Nov. 5 in Carrollton. Alvarez ran in 16:49, nine seconds behind region titlist Drew Garland of Flowery Branch, helping the Seminoles finish sixth.
Alvarez's teammate, Dontavius Wright, who was Salem's only state representative in 2010, finished 11th (17:49). Rockdale was seventh, thanks to Patrick Massey, who finished 12th, just a second behind Wright at 17:50. Heritage's highest placer was Malik McCrary, who had a 25th-place run of 18:30.
In the girl's race, Jamara Dye of Salem was the highest local finisher, running a 12th-best time of 21:36. Heritage finished sixth as a team, led by Emily Taylor, who ran in 22.13 to finish 13th. Rockdale's highest individual placer was Kyia Havens, who was 53rd (26.42).
