"Could you all hire Meadors over from the Legal Organ aka CovNews to do you some education columns so there is something cool to read here? His last one should be syndicated. Do something to make your paper a must read."
" So who do you think was the no-show superintendent at the Georgia School Superintendents Association conference in Athens, Ga., this past week? You guessed it. Wake up school board. You five hire and fire this position. Get to it. This is the talk of the county and you five must be asleep."
"Thank you Mr. Meadors for holding public forums for public input on the schools. I do not recall school board members doing this in the past. I appreciate what you had to say about in school suspension, school discipline, and the career academy. Teachers feel that you support us and we need that right now more than you know. Thank you for your service in a position we know is thankless."
"Gov. Deal went to China I see. This was done on the taxpayers dime. He says he is going to get the state of Georgia 300 jobs. Wow! The very reason this country is in the state it is in is because of the millions of manufacturing jobs lost to the Chinese. Manufacturing jobs is and has always been the backbone of our middle class economy. The trickle down effect is almost lost due to our jobs going overseas. Greedy manufacturers are filling their pockets and laughing all the way to the bank. The communist Chinese are starving us to death and some people don't see this as the cause of this recession. Instead of Deal sucking up to these forced labor, communist, sweat shop-running, manufacturers in China, he should be figuring a way to get their MFN status removed and get the manufacturing jobs back to America where they belong. When you can walk into an American department store and cannot find one item that is made in America it has gone way too far. Cheap made and low cost is that the way to go. No! American made. Made to last, Made with pride. Made to create jobs and keep our economy strong."
"I am responding to the (reader) who thinks that everyone applying for or is on food stamps should be drug tested. Let me tell you something, not everyone on food stamps is abusing the system, some of us did have good paying jobs but because of the economy and all the jobs being overseas we didn't have much choice. There are a lot of people you would never have expected to see on food stamps that are. I personally know of an attorney, and a former real estate agent who are on food stamps right now. So before you open your mouth and stick your foot in it again, get your facts straight! And I would not be so judgemental, because you don't know one day you might need to be on food stamps, too."
"What would it take for the citizens of Newton County to get a Cracker Barrel here? I realize that, there is one in Rockdale County and in Madison, but I live in Newton. I feel like they would do very well in this county. Please investigate this and let us know."
Editor's Note: Cracker Barrel reps were targeting a parcel along Ga. Highway 142 at one time, but the developer told the Citizen earlier this year that the restaurant will likely not locate there, as reps were unsure if the current economy would support another restaurant so close to the Conyers location.
"I had to go vote today to vote against Bobby Sigman. Give me a break! Publicly blaming the city, the police department, and everyone for 'setting him up,' ... . I am sick and tired of dirty politics and sick and tired of dirty politics in Covington."
"I am sorry Mayfield Hardware closed, because I know the Mayfield family and I would love to spend money locally. That said, I rarely shop in Covington. Why can't we have a place to buy quality clothing at reasonable prices. Why do all of the 'local' shops have to be boutiques with items I neither want nor can afford? We need quality restaurants, quality clothing shops, quality shoe stores, etc. in this county!"
"Most of the time when I write to the poll it's to complain. Today we have something in our community we can all be proud of that's our Alcovy High football team, cheerleader and, band. All three are having a great year and I have enjoyed going to the games. But it is time as a community to come out and support them as it looks like they will host their first home playoff game in its history. On game day wear a black shirt all day, tie black ribbons on your cars and mail boxes no matter if you went or go to Newton or Eastside. Let's as one community come together to support these young people and with a 12 man in the stadium maybe we will go to the dome. Go Tigers."
"Food for Thought: Only five states do not have collective bargaining for educators and have deemed it illegal. Those states and their ranking on ACT/SAT scores are as follows: South Carolina -50th/ North Carolina -49th/ Georgia -48th/ Texas -47th/ Virginia -44th. Makes you wonder doesn't it?"
"New motto for U.S. Congress: Don't just do something -- stand there!"
"Message to Newton County Board of Commissioners. You really need to think about how to rebuild the morale with your employees and it has been a downward spiral since early 2010. Since then we have taken about a 10 percent pay cut (holidays and overtime), But the prices on everything has gone up. I work in the Fire Department and I have been forced to work overtime with no compensation. There have been multiple days an hour before the shift is over we get a call and don't get back until 30-45 minutes after our shift is over. When we have tried to turn in overtime to get paid for that time we are told you can just throw that away cause you are not getting paid. I thought this was against federal labor laws. Yes, I am lucky to have a job but I along with everyone in this great country deserve compensation for the work I complete. I ask the citizens of this county to start asking the commissioners why all these 'special projects' are being done but we can't pay the employees. Why we are we buying $30,000 vehicles as take home cars outside of Newton County. If I want to buy 3 gallons of gas I have to work more than one hour to pay for this. Cost of living has gone up in the last few years, but we are not getting the same yearly pay as we once were these are people that put their lives on the line for every citizen in this county, these are people that have been committed to the citizens of this county and we are treated as if we are just warm bodies that can be replaced tomorrow. What really needs to be looked at is the pay scale. How can you hire someone after another person and give all new hires a larger starting pay? Where they are making more than a guy that has been here three to five years! All this does is tell your employees you care nothing about them."
Bobby Sigman, ... How can you justify for a moment lashing out at the Covington Police Department and Chief Cotton for your ridiculous behavior and childish actions? You are making the most asinine accusations as if this was all a conspiracy against you. If it were you in Mr. Johnston's place, you would only expect the same actions from the police department on your behalf and I know would be there for you. ..."
"As a point of curiosity, I have driven Highway 36 for the last six years going to my job between the hours of 5-5:30 p.m. This year I have noticed something different. I get behind long lines of traffic every day now and it's all about the buses. I don't have a problem with this, except I was wondering why there are as many as six buses in the caravan and sometimes as many as 40 cars with several 18 wheelers also. This happens almost every day. Has the county changed the school hours? I go to work and pass through the same area around 6:30 AM and get behind at least one bus that turns into a trailer park right before Henderson's. I'm just asking because that is a really long school day. If someone has an answer, I'd sure be interested."
Editor's Note: The Newton County School System changed school hours this school year. Elementary students attend school from 7:40 a.m. to 2:10 p.m., high school from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. and middle school from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
"I was calling about the comment about the Navy Veteran moving the monument from the Square. I think that is the most pathetic thing I have ever heard of. The Confederate Military was a big part of history in the United States. I think it ought to be honored not shoved under the rug."
"I just want to think Mr. Marcus for donating to the Grady Emergency Trauma Room. I think that is a wonderful thing, because those people up there need it. If some of the other people who are well blessed would help it would be a great help to these people. Thank you Mr. Marcus."
