Newton County student struck by vehicle

An Alcovy High School student was struck by a vehicle Thursday morning, according to the Newton County School System.

This happened at approximately 7:30 a.m. as he crossed the Ga. Highway 162 connector to board a school bus stopped in the southbound lane. The student was struck by a vehicle traveling north, according to an NCSS media release sent out Thursday evening.

The AHS student was transported by Newton EMS to Newton Medical Center, where he was treated for minor bruises and scratches and later released.

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident. The Newton County School System is also conducting an internal investigation, according to NCSS Deputy Superintendent Dennis Carpenter.

I see cars that do not stop when the stop sign is out on a school bus. I live on 212 and it has happened three times this year with cars not stopping as my son had to cross the street to get on the bus. I think the solution is simple to arrest the people that do not stop. I know a citation can be given but a trip to jail on the ticket sends a better message. It is just too dangerous to not stop and for what to save you a couple of minutes in the long run. Law enforcement will not be able to catch them all but when they do right to jail and impound the car. The bus fleet should be equipped with cameras like in some locations to record the image of the driver and the tag number when they fail to stop. Another good way to address the issue since people cannot do the right thing on their own. These types of "accidents" can be 100% prevented by just stopping like the big red sign on the bus tells you to.

Another thing that should be done is the bus drivers need to be "closely" monitored for their bad driving habits like "rushing" through neighborhoods clearly posted 25 MPH & driving 35-40 MPH or 60% above the max. with & without children aboard.

WELL I FEEL LIKE ITS VERY DANGEROUS FOR KIDS CROSSING THAT SECTION OF HWY 162 ..BUT I HOPE THIS OPENS THE EYES OF NCSS TRANSPORTATION DEPT.. I HAVE SEEN NEAR MISSES ON HWY 36 AND HWY 162 AND ALSO IN PORTERDALE ON WASHINGTON STREET ..WHILE BUSES ARE STOPPED AND CARS JUST RUN THE STOP SIGN CAUSE THEY ARE ON THE PHONE OR NOT PAYING ATTENTION .. I GUESS IF EVERYONE WORKS TOGETHER AND WATCH OUT FOR CHILDREN ANY AGES ... HOPING THIS WILL BE THE ONLY ACCIDENT WE WILL HEAR ABOUT ... SO PLEASE TO ALL DRIVERS STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES ..IF IT WAS YOUR CHILD, GRANDCHILD, YOU WOULD DO WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO STOP THESE DRIVERS ....
