Former local soccer athletes thrive in college play

A handful of former local soccer athletes have prospered at the college level.

MOBILE -- Heritage graduate Melissa Drish has had an excellent season as goalkeeper for South Alabama. Drish, a sophomore at the Mobile, Ala., school, is 11-4-3 with a 1.09 goals-against-average and seven shutouts. In two recent games, Drish pitched a shutout in a 0-0, two overtime tie with Middle Tennessee, and was excellent again in 1-0 loss to Western Kentucky. The Jaguars close the Sun Belt Conference schedule with a game at Troy University, Oct. 28.

Former Salem duo helping Panthers

ATLANTA -- A pair of former Salem stars are contributing on the pitch for Georgia State. Redshirt-sophomore Jordan Young has a goal and six assists (eight points) in 19 games at forward, while goalkeeper Kelliane Collins, a senior, has 62 saves and a 1.79 GAA in 13 games (12 starts) in net.

Young leading Mercer

MACON -- Defenseman Ryan Young has helped Mercer to a 7-6-2 record as the Bears get set to go on the road for their final two Atlantic Sun regular season games. Young, a senior from Rockdale, has started all 15 games and chipped in a goal and two assists. Mercer travels to Lipscomb tonight.
