COVINGTON -- Eastside's Naomi Denby won comfortably at the NEWROCK cross country meet Tuesday at Newton High School, helping the Eagles win the girl's portion of the event.
Denby ran in 22:35, more than 30 seconds better than second-place Simone Worthy of Heritage (23:06), which helped Eastside hold off the Patriots, 34-39. Jamara Dye of Salem finished third at 23:09, while Eastside's Rhodelle Lewis was fourth (23:30) and Emily Taylor of Newton finished fifth at 23:38.
On the boy's side, Newton's Alex Grady blitzed the field to finish first at 17:22, while the Salem duo of Gabrielle Alvarez and Dontavious Wright finished second and third at 17:50 and 18:16, respectively. Rounding out the top five, Malik McCrary of Heritage (18:27) led the Patriots to the boy's title, while finished fourth and Rockdale's Patrick Massee was fifth at 18:54.
Heritage won the overall event, out-pacing Eastside, 77-129.
